FOSTER STORIES
From shelter ride to sofa: a dog’s first 72 hours in foster care
For a newly rescued animal, foster care is the bridge between uncertainty and home.
When a transport arrives in Colorado, every dog steps into a world that feels completely new. The sounds are different. The people are unfamiliar. Even a soft bed can be confusing at first.
That is where foster families come in. They offer a calm place to land while our team learns what each animal needs to thrive. The first few days do not need to be perfect. They only need to be safe, quiet, and consistent.

The arrival: keep the world small
The best welcome is often a simple one. A foster dog may need a short potty break, fresh water, and a quiet room before they are ready to explore. Limiting new people, pets, and experiences gives them time to take in their surroundings without becoming overwhelmed.

The first night: routine builds trust
Some dogs fall asleep immediately. Others pace, whine, or watch the door. None of these responses define who the dog will become. A predictable evening—dinner, a bathroom break, a little quiet time, then rest—helps them understand what happens next.
“You do not have to know everything on day one. Give them a safe place to exhale, and let the relationship grow from there.”
03
Settling in: notice the little wins
By the second or third day, many foster dogs begin to show glimpses of themselves. A tucked tail starts to wag. A cautious dog chooses the rug beside you. A puppy discovers that the squeaky toy is, in fact, very exciting.
Fosters help us notice those details and share them with future adopters. Appetite, energy, favorite toys, comfort around other animals, and everyday routines all help create a clearer, more honest adoption profile.
